Well Kinja isn’t allowing me to “like” or approve of your post, but it is very gratifying, especially the sped-up, Keystone Kops aspect of the thief running back and forth. I wonder if what you are charged with depends on the value of the package being stolen, even though you didn’t know what was inside.

good
but.... why do packages get left by the front door over there?
dont do that here (very often) mostly drivers here will try to drop packages off at neighbours .. on more rural routes they’ll walk out back and try the shed or something then drop a note in the mailbox saying where its left (in one case i was present for it got left in the paper bin..)
leaving them right out front is kinda begging for opportunistic bastards to nick it

Stupid kinja... it’s really broken for me as well.

I always order my shit to the post office and pick it up from there; way fewer issues with safety.

They get left by the front door because theft is rare enough that for most people it is not a huge issue. The extra time to try to find someone else to take the package isn’t worth it. Also in many places there’s not really the neighborliness required for that, people would resent dealing with their neighbor’s crap, and recipients wouldn’t trust their neighbors with their stuff (American’s independent streak can also be quite anti-social). In the old days houses sometimes had latching cubbies for milk/egg/bread delivery, and honestly I’m surprised we haven’t a modern version in the form of a package locker become common in new construction.
A street like the one in the video would be pretty safe, the front door is out of the way, and there’s going to be basically no foot traffic (with his shopping bag, I wonder if this guy was doing this “professionally” rather than it just being an opportunistic grab.)
In any event, ultimately companies find it more affordable to replace rather than having more careful deliver or risking losing a sale by having stricter delivery requirements. If you live in place where thefts are common it can be a major inconvenience, but in most places, it’s really not a major problem .

thanks... over here its just normal to accept neighbours packages...even if you barely say hi to them when you see them... (some people refuse tho)

Yeah, here if you were getting something expensive you might ask a neighbor you know well to receive it (though delivery guys are on tight schedules, walking to the next house over could be too much of a burden, so they might ignore a note and just leave it anyway). Some people who are worried about their packages get them delivered to work (though there’s sometimes a strange stigma about that, the idea that you are wasting company resources, or live in some place so embarrassing bad that you can’t receive packages). Apartments will take packages at the reception desk or leasing office if they have either of those on-site. A friend of mine in a walk-up apartment that had neither had the dry-cleaner on the first floor take his. And of course Amazon had been pushing their lockers, since it simplifies their deliveries and removes the threat of theft.

Our towns are pretty safe. In the 30 years I’ve lived in this town I’ve never had a package swept, nor no anyone who has lost a package. Probably not as civil in the cities, but the burbs is the good life.
If I have something really expensive coming my neighbors are pretty chill with a sign and hold but it’s never necessary.

lol yeah.. over here most drivers are paid per delivered package.. so they will do damn near anything they can to not return with said package
but also thinking on your first reply.... foot/bicycle traffic is most traffic round here... shit left by the front door goes missing without fail.. that probably has something to do with it just not being done over here
(for some reason shit left in the back yard doesnt go missing near as often...even if its visible.... i guess the thieves of oportunity think its more illegal to make the effort to walk into the back yard to steal than it is to just yoink it off the porch)
them amazon boxes sound like a pretty good idea tho.... just need it to work for all other deliveries too

well thats good :)
tbh.. my place is safe enough that i hardly ever lock the doors
but anything left out front will get stolen... (well anything that looks like it might be worth anything)
just to o many people walking or cycling by.... and a fuckton of school/college kids who do before they think and havent develloped a sense of guilt yet

My Ryobi 1/2” impact came with no shipping box or wrapping. Just the actual store package. Out there on my Porsche for the whole world to see. I was not happy

Over here that’s unheard of. Packages always get left on the front doorstep - MAYBE a very considerate delivery driver will try to put it behind a potted plant or something
but that’s it.

Well, I live in an appartment building, so it’s mostly with access... Whenever I order food on Uber and shit I also walk out to the street to get it... on me’ jammies.
I also order to the post office in Spain because my grandparents live in a very rural county without street addresses. So it’s often less of a pain to drive 30mins to the nearest town than have the package be a week late.
But I think that it applies to houses in the suburbs as well, even without safety in mind, the package might sit there and weather might be bad, or maybe animals; I just would rather handle it myself.

This is one of the reasons we've had a Post Office Box for nigh on twenty years now...and anything couriered goes to my mechanic in town.

People get my mail by accident sometimes and can’t even be bothered to return it. I usually ship boxes to the office to make sure I get them.

Thanks for the reminder, this might be the first year I didn’t get any Christmas cards for the previous owner of my house! It’s my tenth Christmas here.
